Microsoft Word is a word processing program used
to write letters and produce professional looking documents. We
practice using this program at all grade levels year round.
Starting Word
We learn to start the Word program several ways: From a desktop
shortcut, quick launch toolbar and the traditional Start > Programs
> Microsoft Word method.
Understanding the Microsoft Word screen layout
Castlebay students are familiarized with the screen layout and work
area where we learn about the menus, toolbars, viewing choices and
essential buttons.
Using Toolbars
There are well over a dozen toolbars in Word. We use several of them
including the menu bar, standard toolbar, drawing toolbar, picture
toolbar, and word-art toolbar. A frequently used one is the
Formatting Toolbar. This toolbar is used to change or "format" text.
It offers easy visual access to the most common formatting options.
Kindergartners will learn how to use this toolbar to change font
sizes and colors while upper grades will explore and use every
option available.
Fun Stuff
Students learn to create exciting visuals in Microsoft Word using
word art and clip art.
