Microsoft Excel is an application commonly used to create
spreadsheets to enter, analyze and perform calculations on numerical
data. Castlebay students from 2nd through 5th grade learn to
use this powerful and popular business application.
Students are introduced to basic terminology such as worksheets,
columns, rows, cells, labels, values and formulas.
In the following example, students learn what an income statement
is, what it is used for and how to create it. They also learn that
they can use these spreadsheets to do "what if" calculations. What
if I lower my cost of lemons, or increase my revenue? This
demonstrates the power of formulas and shows the value of using
EXCEL instead of simply creating tables and static text in Microsoft
Word.
Students learn to create various types of charts using the data
input into their spreadsheets. In this example students identify and
select the expenses to be displayed in a pie and bar graph. They
then see how helpful this visual aid can be used to analyze the
costs.
